After having visited both facilities, there are a few differences-bear in mind this is purely my opinion.
The Cairns aquarium is aesthetically ‘prettier’. The building is an eye catching design, whereas Townsville aquarium to me, feels a little industrial. Inside the Cairns building, the interior design and artwork is more modern and fresh, and you could argue it’s more colourful.
The Cairns aquarium showcases our Aussi outback reptilian friends with several enclosures housing snakes, lizards, stick insects, and spiders. The Townsville facility focuses predominantly on Marine life-and I stand corrected if this has changed.
The Townsville Aquarium is slightly larger, with the main tank being bigger than the main Cairns tank. Although spectacular, the Cairns main tank lacks the larger sharks that can be seen in our rival city.
An eye-catching venue, with a large variety of marine life, reptiles, coral, and feature tanks. Many large rays, and a few hammer head sharks, plenty of reef fish, turtles and jelly fish to watch. Well worth a visit, a fantastic tourist attraction, and reasonable value for money.
My opinion on who wins?
Townsville by a shark.
